The Shri Sarneshwar Mahadev Fair is one of the most prominent and historic fairs of Sirohi district. It is organized at the Shri Sarneshwar Mahadev Temple, located on the western slopes of the Siranwa Hills near Sirohi city.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered the family deity (Kuldevta) of the Deora Chauhan rulers. Its fort-like architecture and historical significance give it a special identity.

Every year, thousands of devotees gather here to witness a vibrant mix of faith, tradition, and festivity.
On this day, the Sirohi Fort is also opened to the public – it is the only day of the year when common people are allowed inside the fort.

Highlights of the Fair

  • Date – The fair is held every year on Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi (according to the Hindu calendar, August/September).

  • Role of the Devasi (Rabari) Community
Centuries ago, the Rabari community protected this temple.
Due to this, only members of the Devasi community in traditional attire are allowed to enter the temple premises after evening on the fair day.

  • Rituals and Traditions

    • Special worship of the Shivling and sacred rituals.
    • Devotees observe fasts and seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
    • Folk songs, devotional hymns, and religious programs are performed.
  • Government Significance

    • A local holiday is often declared in the district on this day.
    • Police and administration present a Guard of Honour to the deity.

Historical Background of the Fair

The origins of this fair date back to the 13th century:

  • In 1298 AD, Sultan Alauddin Khilji attacked Gujarat and took away a Shivling.
  • On the way, the Rabari community of Sirohi, under the leadership of Raw Vijayaraj Deora, reclaimed it.
  • The sacred Shivling was then established in the Sarneshwar Temple.

Since then, this temple and its fair have stood as symbols of devotion, bravery, and cultural pride for Sirohi.
