Sirohi Fort sits atop the rugged Siranwa Hill, overlooking the town of Sirohi in southern Rajasthan, approximately 20 km away. Founded in 1425 CE by Rao Sahastramal, son of Rao Sobhaji, it served as the capital of the Deora Chauhan dynasty and remains a symbol of regional heritage.

Location & Origins

Sirohi Fort was established by the Deora Chauhan Rajputs. The fort reflects strategic planning, local craftsmanship, and the political autonomy of the region.

Historical Significance

Built by the Deora Chauhan Rajputs, Sirohi Fort served as a symbol of political autonomy and regional power.
Notably, Sirohi stood out among Rajput states as one that never accepted Mughal or Maratha suzerainty.
The fort and its associated structures reflect an era of valor, local resistance, and traditional architectural expertise.

Architecture & Access

The fort is constructed from local black stone and features visible fortifications, bastions, gates, and palace remnants on the hill’s slope.
Although striking from a distance, public access is extremely limited — the fort is often closed year‑round and rarely open except during occasions like Mahashivaratri or local fairs.

Surrounding Sites

  • Just north of the fort lies the Sarneshwar Mahadev Temple, the kuladeva (family deity) shrine of the Sirohi royal clan.
  • According to legend, it commemorates a Rajput victory over Sultan Alauddin Khilji’s forces in the late 13th century.
  • This battle victory is still celebrated annually during the Sarneshwar fair, featuring the local Rabari community.
  • Nearby, other attractions include Jain temples, the Varman Sun Temple, and the ancient ruins of Chandravati — making the region culturally rich and visually compelling.

Why It Matters

  • Despite being less touristy than other Rajasthani forts, Sirohi Fort offers a serene and evocative ambiance surrounded by Aravalli hills.
  • Its blend of history, legend, and architectural charm makes it a rewarding destination for heritage photographers and offbeat travelers.
