Sundha Mata Temple, located at the peak of Sundha Mountain in the Jalore district of Rajasthan, is a sacred site dedicated to Mother Chamunda (a form of Durga). This temple is approximately 900 years old, made of white marble, and its architecture resembles that of the Dilwara Temples in Mount Abu. It holds great religious and historical importance, containing inscriptions from the 13th century.

Location and Mythological Importance

Situated at an elevation of about 1,220 meters above sea level on Sundha Hill in the Aravalli Range, this temple is in the Raniwada area of Jalore district. It is about 20 km from Bhinmal, 35 km from Raniwada, and 64 km from Mount Abu.
Devotees believe this is a powerful Shakti Peeth, where the nose (nasika) of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen, hence also called Aghateshwari.

Historical and Religious Significance

The temple was built around 900 years ago by the Devla Pratiharas, with support from the Chauhans of Jalore.
Three inscriptions dated 1262, 1326, and 1727 AD reflect the victories and history of local dynasties, considered as important as India’s major historical records.

Architecture and Sculpture

Constructed of marble, the temple showcases beauty similar to the pillars of Mount Abu’s Dilwara Temples.
It houses the head of Goddess Chamunda, while the torso is believed to lie in Korta and the feet in Sundarla Pal. Ancient idols of Shiva-Parvati, Ganesha, and a Bhoorbhuwah Swaveshwar Shivling are also present.

Festivals and Rituals

Grand celebrations occur during Navratri, attracting devotees from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Every full moon (Purnima) sees large attendance, with major fairs during Vaishakh, Bhadrapad, and Kartik.

Access and Pilgrim Facilities

Visitors can climb approximately 500 stone steps or use Rajasthan’s first ropeway service spanning 800 meters (6 minutes), with fares ranging ₹50–₹130 depending on age and route.
The temple is open daily from 5 AM until sunset (~8–9 PM). Facilities include dharamshalas, food courts, and scenic viewpoints.

Surrounding Sanctuary and Nature

The Sundha Mata Wildlife Sanctuary surrounds the temple, covering nearly 107 sq. km. It is home to bears, nilgai (blue bulls), hyenas, foxes, jungle cats, langurs, and over 120 bird species.
A perennial waterfall flowing from the hill enhances the natural beauty and tranquility.

A Gem for Hill Photographers and Travelers

A rare blend of spiritual architecture, natural scenery, and wildlife, with a 360° view from the Aravalli summit.
Outside festival times, the site remains relatively quiet, ideal for peaceful pilgrimage or documentary-style photography.
This destination combines historic legends, mythological depth, and visual beauty seamlessly.
